Lakers win SUNYAC opener with 66-50 triumph at Geneseo

Junior guard Tricia Sullivan (Copenhagen) was one of three players to score in double digits, registering her first career "double-double" with 12 points and a game-high 10 rebounds to help Oswego State snap a two-game losing streak with a 66-60 win over host SUNY Geneseo on Tuesday, Dec. 2. It was the conference opener for both teams.

Sullivan, who played 39 of 40 minutes for the Lakers, pulled down five rebounds on offense and defense, dished out a game-high tying three assists and registered a pair of steals.

Freshman forward Kayla Ryan (Schaghticoke/Hoosick Valley) led all scorers with 16 points, hitting 5-for-8 from the field goals (2-for-2 from three-point range), 4-for-4 from the free-throw line, and pulling down nine rebounds.  Senior guard Heather Merino (Queensbury/Lake George) followed with 14 points, also making 5-for-8 field goals, and grabbed seven rebounds as the Lakers (3-2 overall, 1-0 SUNYAC) shot 40 percent (22 of 55) from the line with six 3-pointers, while holding the Blue Knights (1-4, 0-1 SUNYAC) to 28.6 percent (16 of 56) shooting from the floor.

Oswego held a 35-24 halftime advantage at Merino scored 10 points on 4-for-5 shooting from the floor, and Ryan followed with nine points, hitting all three shots from the floor, including a three-pointer, making both free throws, and pulling down six rebounds.

Geneseo managed to cut the lead to six points (44-38) on a three-pointer with 11:20 to play, but the Lakers answered with an 11-0 run over a 5:20 stretch, with junior guard Rachel Kohrs (New Lebanon) scoring five of her eight points in the run, to increase the lead to 54-38. Oswego was never threatened for the remainder of the game, leading by as many as 19 points (61-42) on a three-pointer by Sullivan with 3:20 to play.

Sophomore guard Traci Bacon (Massena) finished with nine points, four rebounds, three assists and two steals, while sophomore Erin Ostrander (Angelica/Genesee Valley) rounded out the scoring for the Lakers with seven points, four rebounds ans three assists.

Oswego will take on Morrisville State in its SUNYAC home opener on Saturday, Dec. 6 at 6:00 p.m.
