Lakers earn shutout victory over Cortland in ECAC Women's West game

The Oswego State women's ice hockey team broke open a close game with three goals in the second period and went on to a 5-0 win over Cortland at Alumni Arena in Cortland on Saturday afternoon.

Five different players recorded goals, Erica Shapey had three assists, and Hilary Hitchman earned the shutout with 15 saves for the Lakers. Oswego State is now 7-10-1 overall and 2-7-0 in ECAC Women's West play. They moved ahead of the Red Dragons in the standings, as Cortland now stands at 3-12-3 overall and 1-7-1 in the league.

Gillian Toneguzzo scored the only goal of the first period on assists from Shapey and Jessica Lister.

The Lakers scored three goals in the second period. Angie Friesen tallied on the power play assisted by Jenna Kirkwood and Krista Pattemore, and Kirkwood added an unassisted goal. Sarah Hannon scored late in the period on assists from Shapey and Toneguzzo, and it was Hannon's first collegiate goal.

The only goal in the third came late in the period as Lister scored her team-leading seventh of the season by deflecting a point shot by Brenna Weber. Shapey drew the secondary assist.

The same two teams meet again Sunday at 2 p.m. at Cortland's Alumni Arena.
