Downing, Perioli lead Lakers to SUNYAC win

Tommy Downing scored a game-high 22 points, and Nick Perioli added 19 for the Lakers, as the Oswego State men's basketball team defeated visiting Geneseo 81-70 on Friday night at Max Ziel Gymnasium in Oswego in a SUNY Athletic Conference game.

The Lakers built a 20-point lead in the first 10 minutes of the game, and held a 42-28 advantage at halftime.

Geneseo came out of the locker room and scored the first eight points of the second half to narrow the deficit to six, but that was as close as the Blue Knights would get, as Oswego State answered with a 14-3 run and never looked back.

Downing made five 3-pointers in the game, and now has 17 treys in his last three games. Perioli added six assists to his 19-point effort. The Lakers carry a seven-game winning streak into Saturday afternoon's matchup against Brockport, which currently leads the SUNYAC West Division.

Mahamoud Jabbi added 12 points for the Lakers and Dom White had eight points, eight rebounds, and four blocked shots for Oswego State.

Geneseo was led by 16 points off the bench by Ryun Hasenauer. Jeff Howe scored 14 and Joe Kling added 11. The Blue Knights' leading scorer, Scott Morton, was held to 1-for-8 from the field and scored just seven points, well below his average of 17.8 points per game.

Oswego State is now 15-4 overall and 9-2 in the SUNYAC, while Geneseo fell to 14-7 overall and 7-5 in the conference. The Lakers host Brockport at 4 p.m. Saturday.
