The Oswego State women's soccer team attempted a last-minute comeback late in the second half, but visiting Oneonta State added an insurance goal with 4:33 left in the game to hold on for a 4-2 lead in the SUNYAC opener for both teams on Saturday, Sept. 20 at Laker Field.
The Red Dragons (4-2, 1-0 SUNYAC), the defending conference champion, jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first half on goals from Dana DeSimone (18:49) and Lindsay Brechbiel (34:50). They added to their lead at the 57:49 mark on a goal from Kelly Wanser before the Oswego (2-4, 0-1 SUNYAC) offense came to life and pulled to within a goal with unassisted scores from junior Tricia Sullivan (Copenhagen) at 73:08) and sophomore Kelly Morritt (Syosset/Holy Trinity) at the 79:00 mark. Oneonta secured the victory with an unassisted insurance goal from Brittnety Reilly at 85:27.
Goalkeeper Kayla Murphy made a pair of saves for Oneonta, while Laker sophomore goalie Toby Klein (Westbury/W.T. Clarke) stopped four shots.
The Lakers will play a pair of home games on consecutive days, hosting SUNYIT in a non-conference contest on Tuesday, Sept. 23, then taking on Morrisville State in SUNYAC play the following day. Both games are scheduled for 4 p.m.
