Oswego drops 6-2 decision to Houghton in 2008 season opener.

The Oswego State field hockey team could not find a way to stop the offense of Houghton College, dropping a 6-2 decision to the Highlanders in the season opener on September 3 at Laker Lacrosse Field.

The contest was the debut of head coach Brandi Ostrander, who was named field hockey and women's lacrosse coach this summer.

Ashley Hoffman scored four goals and added an assist to lead Houghton (1-2), who scored the game's first three goals in the opening 20 minutes en route to a 3-0 halftime lead. Oswego scored its first goal of the game in the opening minutes of the second half, when freshman forward Jenny Quinn (Glenville/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) scored on a pass from classmate Jordan McGuire (Macedon/Penfield) at the 36:38 mark, but the Highlanders answered with the next two goals to put the game out of reach.

The Lakers scored their second goal of the contest at 55:53 when junior Eileen O'Neill (New City/Clarkstown South) put a pass from freshman Kelly Collins (Fairport/Fairport) into the net. Houghton completed the scoring on Hoffman's fourth goal of the game with 5:14 to play.

Jenny Huyett (assist) and Amanda Breon tallied a goal each for Houghton, who outshot the Lakers, 21-10, and held a 13-5 advantage on penalty corners.

Goalkeeper Ashley Farr made four saves in goal for Houghton, as did sophomore Jamie Scharfe (Webster/Webster Schroeder) for Oswego.

The Lakers return to the field on Friday, Sept. 5 for a contest with Utica College at 5:00 p.m.
