Playing their third game in four days, the Oswego State field hockey team garnered its first win of the 2008 season with a 5-2 triumph over host New Paltz in the SUNYAC opener for both teams. The victory snapped a five-game losing streak for the Lakers dating back to 2007.
Oswego made the most of their opportunities early, with all five goals coming in the first half. Junior forward Eileen O'Neill scored the games opening goal,her second of the season, at the 6:07 mark off a penalty corner, assisted by junior co-captain Kimm Hiffa (Holland/Holland Patent) and freshman Kelly Collins (Fairport/Fairport). After the Hawks (0-2 overall, 0-1 SUNYAC) tied the score two minutes later, Oswego answered with five unanswered goals in a span of 16:26.
Collins scored the first two goals of the run at 11:15 and 18:29, both assisted by sophomore Brittany Roetzer (Akron/Akron). Roetzer followed with her second goal of the season at 22:42 (assisted by Hiffa and Collins), before Collins registered the hat trick with her third goal of the day at 44:35 on an assist by Roetzer, her third of the game. In three games played so far, Collins has tallied four assists, registering at least one in each contest.
New Paltz was led by Jessi Moore, who accounted for both Hawk goals, including the game's last goal at 44:35 of the second half.
Sophomore goalie Jamie Scharfe (Webster/Webster Schroeder) stopped six shots in picking up the victory in the nets for the Lakers.
Oswego stays on the road for its next four contest before returning to Laker Field on Wednesday, September 24 for a meeting with Cortland in the annual "Dragons Sword" game.
