Lakers defeat Morrisville, 75-60, behind strong second-half effort

Senior co-captain Heather Merino (Queensbury/Lake George) led all scorers with a season-high 25 points and was one of three starters scoring in double figures as Oswego State outscored visiting Morrisville State 37-19 in the second half to overome a three point halftime deficit in picking up its fourth victory in the last five games, defeating the Mustangs 75-60 in SUNYAC action on Friday, Jan. 23.

Merino connected on nine of 10 shots from the floor, made all seven of her free-throw attempts, and collected two blocked shots and two steals in 33 minutes of action. She tallied 19 points in the opening half, going 7-for-9 from the floor, and 5-for-5 from the line as the Lakers (8-8, 6-2 SUNYAC)  trailed the Mustangs at halftime, 38-41.

Freshman forward Kayla Ryan (Schaghticoke/Hoosic Valley) and senior co-captain Rachel Kohrs tallied 15 and 14 points, respectively. Kohrs scored 13 points in the second half, while Ryan added nine points as Oswego, who trailed by five 22 seconds into the second half after a Morrisville layup, went on a 15-3 run to take a 53-46 lead with 15:04 remaining. Kohrs scored eight points in the run, hitting a pair of three pointers, while Ryan added six points.

Morrisville would pull to within three points on three occasions before the Lakers would break the game open with a 12-2 run to take a 67-59 lead with 4:35 to play.

Oswego shot 46.3 percent (25 of 54) from the floor and hit five of 10 from three point range for the game, while holding Morrisville, who shot 47.1 percent (16 of 34) in the opening half, to only 29.6 percent (eight of 27) in the second half.

Freshman Courtney Terzi was one of four starters in double digits for Morrisville (2-12, 0-8 SUNYAC), scoring 15 of her team-leading 16 points in the opening half.
