Lakers defeat Chatham, 5-1, in first of two-game series

  Oswego State scored a pair of power-play goals, with junior defense Angie Friesen scoring the game winner in the second period, en route to a 5-1 victory over host Chatham College in the first game of a two-game ECAC Women's West series on Saturday, Jan. 24 in Pittsburgh.

The Lakers (6-8-1, 3-5-1 ECAC West) scored the game's first goal 1:35 into the game as senior Jessica Lister (Aurora, ONT) scored on the power play with assists from classmate Stephanie Esposito (Parish) and sophomore Erica Shapey (Plainview). Esposito and Shapey also assisted on the winner from Friesen, the game's first star,  at 4:45 of the second period, leading off a string of three straight goals in the period.

Freshman Kelly Collins (Fairport) scored the second goal in the period for Oswego at the 10:00 mark, assisted by senior Ashley Meyers (Lockport) and freshman Jillian Bergeron (Brockville, ONT), then joined Bergeron on the assist on a goal from freshman Lauren Gilpin (Georgetown, ONT) with 27 seconds remaining in the period.

Myers finished the scoring for the Lakers with her goal at 2:23 into the third period (Shapey and Sarah Hannon assisting) before Chatham ended the shutout bid by goalie Emi Williams (Anchorage, AK) with an unassisted power-play goal at the 7:12 mark.

Oswego outshot the Cougars (2-14-1, 2-9-0 ECAC West), 34-22, with Williams making 21 saves in the nets to improve to 4-5-1 on the season, Both teams play again in game two on Sunday at 2 p.m.
