McCready free throw lifts Lakers to 57-54 win at Potsdam

Sophomore forward Colleen McCready (Pittsford/Pittsford Mendon) scored the final three points of the game, including the go-ahead free throw with 1:27 remaining in the second half, in helping the Lakers to a 57-54 triumph over host SUNY Potsdam in a SUNYAC matchup on Saturday, Jan. 31 at Maxcy Hall.

McCready was one of three players scoring in double digits for the Lakers (9-9, 7-4 SUNYAC), sharing top team scoring honors with junior guard Traci Bacon (Massena) with 13 points each.  McCready made six of 11 field goals, pulled down five rebounds, and registered a steal in 24 minutes coming off of the bench.  Bacon shot 5-for-9 from the field with a three-pointer, pulled down seven rebounds, and dished out three assists in playing all but one minute of action.  Freshman Kayla Ryan (Schaghticoke/Hoosic Valley) finished with 12 points, posting game highs with eight rebounds and three steals.

Oswego jumped out to a 37-33 halftime lead, shooting 59.3 percent (16 of 27), behind 11 and nine points from Bacon and Ryan, respectively. The Lakers built the lead up to seven points (44-37) 4:41 into the second half before Potsdam (12-7, 5-5 SUNYAC) scored the next 12 points to jump to a 49-44 lead with 10:59 to play.  Oswego responded with an 8-0 run off of jumpers from Bacon and McCready, a three-pointer from sophomore Erin Ostrander (Angelica/Genesee Valley), and a free throw from Ryan.to retake the lead, 52-49, with 6:51 remaining.

Potsdam would tie the score two more times, the last coming at the 2:56 mark, before McCready would seal the win, hitting the first of a two-shot foul, then connecting on a jumper after a steal from junior Rachel Kohrs (New Lebanon) with 23 seconds to play. Kohrs finished with a game-high seven steals to go with three assist and three points

Courtney Poirier of Potsdam led all scorers with 17 points and also contributed six steals.
