Box Score
The Oswego State women's soccer team played to a 1-1 draw against host Brockport on Friday despite two overtime periods. The Golden Eagles won the shootout 4-3, but the tie allowed the Lakers to move into a three-way tie with Geneseo and Cortland for the sixth and final SUNYAC playoff spot. Oswego State moved to 6-7-1 overall and 2-3-1 in the league, while Brockport improved to 8-1-3 overall and 4-0-2 in the conference.
Freshman sensation Michelle Bateman (Fulton, N.Y.) put the Lakers on the board in the third minute of the contest when she broke away on the right side to score her 14th goal of the season. The Golden Eagles would gain control of the game near the midway point of the first half. However, Oswego State goalkeeper Christina Fregosi (Massapequa, N.Y.) helped the Lakers maintain their lead by stopping five shots in the period.
Brockport continued to pressure Fregosi and the defense in the second half before Jessica VanAllen knotted the contest at 1-1 when her shot went over Fregosi's head in the 54th minute. Oswego State fought off the Golden Eagle attack for the remainder of the half to send to overtime.
In the opening minute of extra time, Abby Smith nearly ended the game for Brockport, but her shot careened off of the crossbar. Neither squad was able to get the ball past the opposing goalkeepers after 110 minutes though.
In the shootout, both teams were still tied at three kicks apiece after the mandatory five attempts as Brooke Sherman (Sr., Oswego, N.Y.), Bateman, and Steph San Antonio (So., Plainview, N.Y.) netted the goals for the Lakers. On the sixth kick, Oswego State missed its shot high, while the Golden Eagles scored to the right side of the net.
Fregosi finished the game with 13 stops, while Brockport goalkeeper Erin Asquith made eight saves. The Golden Eagles took 30 shots in the match compared to 13 for the Lakers.
Oswego State faces Geneseo on Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. in Geneseo. Both squads are tied in the conference standings at 2-3-1.
