The Oswego State women's soccer team was unable to hang onto an early 1-0 lead as the Lakers fell to host Geneseo on Saturday afternoon. The loss dropped Oswego State one game out of the sixth and final conference playoff berth at 2-4-1 with two games to play and 6-8-2 overall. The Blue Knights improved to 9-4-1 overall and 3-3-1 in the league standings for the last post-season spot.
Michelle Bateman (Fr., Fulton, N.Y.) struck for the Lakers in the 11th minute when she took a shot from 18 yards that went into the lower left hand corner of the net past Geneseo goalkeeper Katie Clerkin.
However, Eileen Coyle tied the game at 1-1 in the 17th minute when she gained control of an attempted clear by Oswego State from 16 yards out. The Blue Knights took the lead less than five minutes later as Melissa Beale scored on a one-timer after Jane Matejcik served the ball on a corner kick. The score remained 2-1 at the intermission with Geneseo holding a 6-2 edge in shots on goal.
The Blue Knights continued to control play in the second half, getting off four shots on goal, but Christina Fregosi (Fr., Massapequa, N.Y.) kept Geneseo from extending its lead. The Lakers were unable to get any momentum on offense though as they mustered just two shots in the frame.
Fregosi finished the game with six saves, while Clerkin tallied just one save.
Oswego State will travel to New Paltz next Friday to take on the Hawks at 3 p.m.
