Box Score

Eric Selleck (So., Spencerville, Ont.) and Jon Whitelaw (Fr., Huntsville, Ont.) recorded two goals apiece to help the eighth-ranked Oswego State men's hockey team knock off top-ranked Plattsburgh 5-2 on Saturday night in Plattsburgh. The Lakers were out-shot 34-14, but goaltender Kyle Gunn-Taylor (Sr., West Seneca, N.Y.) turned in a stellar performance as he registered 32 saves. Oswego State improved to 5-1-0 overall and 4-0-0 in the SUNYAC, while Plattsburgh fell to 3-1-0 overall and 3-1-0 in the league.

Plattsburgh controlled play throughout most of the first period, but the Lakers took advantage of a Cardinal high-sticking penalty late in the frame when Eric Selleck scored his fifth goal of the season.  Assists were awarded to Chris Laganiere (Jr., Owego, N.Y.) and Stephen Mallaro (Jr., Syracuse, N.Y.) on the goal.

Less than two minutes after Selleck's goal, Oswego State took a 2-0 lead when Jon Whitelaw scored 17 seconds into another Laker power play after receiving a pass from Selleck and Justin Fox (Jr., Whitby, Ont.).  The Lakers skated into the first intermission holding the two-goal advantage.

Plattsburgh tallied a power play goal of its own in a 5-on-3 situation with 4:44 elapsed in the second period when Kyle Kudroch got the puck past Kyle Gunn-Taylor.  The Cardinals tied the game at 2-2 when Vick Schlueter scored an unassisted goal at the 16:12 mark.  However, Oswego State went into the locker room with the momentum as it regained the lead with one second remaining in the period when Laganiere tallied his fifth goal of the season.  Taylor Farris (Fr., Oakville, Ont.) and Hank Van Boxmeer (So., Orange, Calif.) earned assists on the play.

The teams went back-and-forth for most of the third period until Whitelaw added an insurance goal for the Lakers with assists from Paul Rodrigues (Fr., Etobicoke, Ont.) and Tyler Lyon (Sr., Foxboro, Ont.) with 3:06 remaining in the contest.  Plattsburgh was forced to pull its goaltender facing a two-goal deficit, but Selleck found the back of the empty net for his second goal of the game.

Gunn-Taylor finished the game with 32 saves, while Josh Leis of Plattsburgh stopped nine of the 13 shots he faced.  The win marked the first time that Oswego State defeated the Cardinals since February 3, 2006 in a 7-6 decision.

Oswego State will face Cortland on Friday, Nov. 13 at 7 p.m. in Cortland followed by a home contest against Utica on Saturday, Nov. 14 at 7 p.m.
