OSWEGO - Freshman forward
Lauren Gilpin (Georgetown, ONT) scored the game's lone goal as the Lakers defeated SUNY Cortland, 1-0, to sweep the weekend ECAC Women's West series on Sunday, Feb. 1 at the Campus Center Ice Arena. The win moves Oswego State into a tie with Utica College for fifth place in the standings with 11 points. The teams will meet in Utica for a crucial two-game series on Friday, Feb. 6 and Saturday, Feb. 7. The top six teams from the conference at the end of the regular season will qualify for the ECAC Women's West playoffs.
Gilpin scored the game winning goal for the Lakers (8-9-1, 5-6-1 ECAC Women's West) on a scramble, netting a rebound at 17:50 of the third period. Freshman forward Jillian Bergeron (Brockville, ONT) was credited with the assist.
The Red Dragons (3-13-3, 2-8-2 ECAC Women's West) tested sophomore goaltender Emi Williams (Anchorage, AK) 15 times and Williams picked up her second consecutive shutout, including seven saves made with the Lakers shorthanded, to improve to 6-5-0 on the season.
Oswego State was perfect on the penalty kill, fending off all seven of Cortland's power play opportunities. This included a 6-on-4 for the final 29 seconds of the game after the Lakers were called for a tripping penalty and the Red Dragons pulled goaltender Katie Double.
Double faced 24 shots from the Lakers, staying perfect until late in the third period when Gilpin beat her to give Oswego the only lead of the game.
