The Laker's struggled shooting the ball all night shooting 27 percent from the field for the game, 23 percent in the first half in a losing effort to Oneonta 50-45 Feb. 14 at the Max Ziel Gymnasium. The poor shooting was contagious as Oswego shot 15 percent from behind the arc and 50 percent from the free-throw line.
Two Lakers were in double figures tonight, freshman forward Kayla Ryan (Schaghticoke/Hoosic Valley) had 11 points and seven rebounds and senior forward Heather Merino (Queensbury/Lake George) also had 11 points to go along with 6 rebounds and 4 assists. Sophomore guard Traci Bacon (Massena) had five points and added six rebounds and three steals.
Freshman forward Samantha Szkotak (New York Mills) led the Red Dragons with eight points and four rebounds going four of six from the field. Senior Forward Shannon Weir (Milford) scored seven points in the contest five of those coming in the second half. Other contributors included Rebecca Bucci (Marlboro/Our Lady of Lourdes), Megan Bucci (Marlboro/Our Lady of Lourdes), Amanda Mc Dowell (Otisville/Minisink Valley) all added six points for Oneonta.
The Lakers led early on 10 to 9, six minutes into the game but would surrender the lead to an Oneonta 8-0 run to go up 17-10 and never relinquishing the lead. Late in the second half Oswego went on an 18 to 5 run to tie up the game with a 1:38 left in the game. Oneonta responded with a 6 to 1 run to close out the game and hand Oswego their second straight loss.
Oswego finishes up the season next week with a home game Friday Feb. 20 against Buffalo State at 6 p.m. in the Max Ziel Gymnasium.
