Lakers fall to Potsdam, 4-2, on Senior Night

OSWEGO – Junior captain Connor Treacy (Markham, ONT) scored a goal and an assist, and sophomore forward Fraser Smith (Fonthill, ONT) scored the game-winner as SUNY Potsdam defeated Oswego State, 4-2, in the final regular season game for both teams at the Campus Center Ice Arena on Saturday, Feb. 21.

Oswego State (17-7-1, 11-4-1 SUNYAC) opened the scoring at 5:46 of the first period on a goal from junior forward Neil Musselwhite (Burlington, ONT). Freshman defenseman Matt Rhymer (Kingston, ONT) answered for the Bears at 14:44 of the period, and the teams went into the intermission tied, 1-1.

Potsdam (9-11-5, 6-6-4 SUNYAC) scored the next two goals of the game, giving them a 3-1 lead. Freshman forward Anthony Proteau scored at 14:38 of the second period, unassisted, to net the only goal of the period for either team. The Bears scored their next goal on their sixth power play of the game as Smith beat Oswego State goaltender Paul Beckwith (Cleveland, OH) for what would end up being the game-winning goal. Two minutes later, senior forward Garren Reisweber (Williamsville, NY) beat Potsdam goaltender Trevor O'Neill (Keswick, ONT) over the left shoulder on a shot from a tight angle to pull the Lakers back within one goal.

With one minute remaining in the period, Beckwith began to skate to the bench in favor of an extra attacker, but Treacy stole the puck and started toward the Lakers' net. Beckwith raced back to the crease, but couldn't get there in time as Treacy put the puck in the empty net to ice the game.

Beckwith made 25 saves in the effort, and O'Neill stopped 19 of the 21 he faced to get the Bears the win.

The Lakers' next game is on Saturday, Feb. 28, when they will play the highest seeded winner of the SUNYAC Play-In round in a SUNYAC Semifinal game at the Campus Center Ice Arena.
