PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. - Nationally No. 3-ranked Plattsburgh State scored four times in the third period to break open a close game to defeat visiting Oswego State, 6-1, in an Eastern College Athletic Conference West Division Tournament quarterfinal game on Saturday at the Stafford Ice Arena. The third-seeded Cardinals advance to next Saturday's semifinals against No. 2 Rochester Tech, as the conference final four will be hosted by regular-season champion and top-seed Elmira College. Plattsburgh won its seventh straight as part of a 12-game unbeaten streak (11-0-1) to improve to 21-3-2 overall, while the No. 6-seeded Lakers end their season at 8-16-1.
Stephanie Moberg paced the Plattsburgh offense with a goal and two assists to give her 35 points on the season, tying her career high which was set last year.
Shay Bywater scored her eighth goal of the season just 25 seconds into the third period, giving Plattsburgh a 3-0 cushion at the time and setting the tone for the rest of the game.
Defenseman Ainsley Brien scored the first of the Cardinals' three power play goals on the afternoon midway through the first period for a 1-0 advantage. Danielle Blanchard wrapped up the Plattsburgh scoring late in the third with her 13th goal, short-handed.
Sophomore Sarah Hannon (Lackawanna, NY) scored with 3 minutes and 50 seconds left in the game for Oswego's lone goal while on the power play, spoiling Danielle Beattie's bid for her seventh shutout this season. Ashley Meyers (Lockport) and Tiarra Garrow (Morrisonville) were credited with the assists.
Plattsburgh outshot Oswego 49 to 10 for the game, including an 18-1 margin in the decisive third period. Emi Williams (Anchorage, AK) had 43 saves for the Lakers, who were making their first-ever postseason appearance in their third year as a varsity program.
