Senior guard
Kyle Reuter (Mexico) scored a game-high 21 points, making 11 of 13 free throws, and was one of four starters scoring in double figures as Oswego State fought off a determined offensive charge from The College at Brockport to come away with a 78-75 SUNYAC victory on Saturday, Feb. 7 at Brockport. The win put the Lakers into a tie for first place with Oneonta State in the conference standings.
Freshman Conor Monaghan (Brooklyn/Xavier) tallied 17 points, going 5-for-7 from the floor with four 3-pointers and making all three free-throw attempts, while senior Tommy Downing (Staten Island/Curtis) added 16 points, three assists, and two steals. Junior Stanley Francois (Valley Cottage/SUNY Cobleskill) contributed 11 points, seven rebounds, and three steals.
The Lakers trailed 41-37 at halftime and for the opening 4:17 of the second half (53-49) before going on a 6-0 run to take a 55-53 lead with 14:18 to play. Brockport would tie the game twice, the last coming with 11:45 remaining (57-57) before the Lakers would go on another 6-0 run to take the lead for good at 63-57 with 9:50 to play.
Brockport (7-13, 3-8 SUNYAC) would pull to within one point, 74-73, with 2:03 left in the game, but Reuter connected on a pair of free throws with 1:01 to play and Downing hit a jumper with eight seconds remaining to keep Brockport, who missed a game-tying three pointer with three seconds to go, at bay.
Reuter scored 15 points in the second half, going perfect (10-for-10) from the free-throw line, while Downing scored eight points and Francois and Monaghan added seven points each.
The Lakers will finish the 2008-09 regular season with four straight home contest over a 10-day stretch, starting with an 8 p.m. contest with third-place SUNY Geneseo on Tuesday, Feb. 10. New Paltz and Oneonta come to Ziel Gymnasium for back-to-Back weekend SUNYAC games on Friday, Feb. 13 and Saturday, Feb. 14, respectively, before closing out the schedule with Buffalo State on Friday, Feb. 20, where Laker seniors Downing and Reuter will be honored prior to the start of the game.
