Plattsburgh nets game winner in overtime of 5-4 win over Lakers in SUNYAC Championship

Plattsburgh scored the game-winning goal 4:20 into the first overtime period to claim their second straight State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC), Hockey Championship at the Ronald B. Stafford Ice Arena in Plattsburgh. Freshman Vick Schlueter scored the winner on the left post of Laker goalie Tim Potter, assisted by linemate Kyle VanderMallie.

The Cardinals (24-1-2), last year's national runner-up, will receive the automatic berth into next week's NCAA Division III Championship tournament, while the Lakers (18-8-1) will wait to see if they gain an at-large berth.

Oswego played an aggressive first period, scoring the game's first two goals in the opening eight minutes.  Sophomore forward Chris Lagagniere (Owego) scored off the deflection of a shot by senior Brendan McLaughlin (Brampton, ONT) from inside the blue line at 5:11, catching Plattsburgh goalie Bryan Hince by surprise as the shot went through his lower left side.

The Lakers scored the second goal at 7:51 as freshman Eric Selleck (Shanley, ONT) scored unassisted from almost the same side as the first score as his slapshot trickled past Hince on his left side.

The Cardinals tallied their first goal at 8:59 as Dan Sliasis took passes from Joey Wilson and Phil Farrow and squeezed  it through a crouching Tim Potter and the left goalpost.

Oswego kept up the momentum in the opening minutes of the second period on back-to-back powerplays, the first coming on the tail end of a Plattsburgh penalty in the final minute of the first period and the second coming more than a minute later.  The Lakers extended the lead to 3-1 at 4:50 on a goal from Rich Zalewski (New Hartford) , shooting from the left side inside the blue line with a slapshot past Hince.

Plattsburgh turned the momentum of the game after taking a power play at the 8:15 mark. Kyle VanderMale intercepted the oncoming pass and scored shorthanded at the 10:00 mark. After killing off the penalty, Oswego was called for a penalty at 10:30. The Cardinals tied the game on a go from Joey Wilson at 12:18, but Oswego retook the lead on a power play goal from Ryan Ellis (Georgetown) at 14:13.

Plattsburgh tied the game again on a power play goal from Riley Hill with 1:21 left in the period. Plattsburgh went 2-for-3 on the power play for the period.

The third period was scoreless but Plattsburgh had a chance to win it in regulation as they went on a 5 on 3 power play with 3:59 remaining in the period as the Lakers were called for hooking and delay of game. Oswego killed off the penalties and sent the game into overtime.

Plattsburgh outshot Oswego, 33-30, with three shots coming into the overtime session, while both goalies played spectacular in the nets, with Potter stopping 28 shots and Hince making 26 saves.

Selleck and Zalewski were named to the five-player All-Tournament team.  Selleck, the 2009 SUNYAC Player of the Year, finished with three goals and an assist in both the semifinal and championship games, while Laganiere finished with two goals and two assists in tournament play.

The Lakers will wait to see if it will receive an at-large berth to the NCAA Division III tournament, which will be announced on Monday morning on NCAA.com.
