Nazareth took an early 1-0 lead that it never relinquished as the Oswego State field hockey team lost 2-0 on Wednesday afternoon in Oswego.
The Golden Flyers grabbed the advantage when Maria Martini got a ball past Laker goalkeeper Jamie Scharfe (Jr., Webster, N.Y.) after a penalty corner with 4:10 gone off of the clock.
Oswego responded with offensive pressure of its own later in the half, but an Alyssa Hare (Fr., Middleport, N.Y.) shot inside the box was stopped by Nazareth goalie Kelsey Evans to preserve the 1-0 lead at the intermission. Both teams moved the ball up and down the field during the period as the Lakers held a 7-4 edge in penalty corners.
The Flyers came out strong in the second half, forcing two penalty corners in the first minute of play. Nazareth extended its lead to 2-0 when Kelly Flanagan scored after a scramble in front of the net in the 37th minute. The goal forced Oswego to turn up its own intensity, resulting in increased ball possession time. Sara Budde (Jr., Appleton, N.Y.) nearly cut the deficit in half late in the game, but Evans was there to make the stop near the right post as the Flyers hung on for the 2-0 win.
Both squads struggled to get shots to either goalkeeper as three of the ten Laker shots reached Evans and three of the seven Nazareth shots reached Scharfe. Oswego dropped to 1-3 overall with the loss, while the Flyers moved to 3-2.
The Lakers start conference play on Saturday at 1 p.m. against rival Cortland at 1 p.m.
