Kelly Collins (So., Fairport, N.Y.) scored with 3:15 elapsed in the game to give the Oswego State field hockey team a lead it would not relinquish en route to a 3-0 victory over the College at Brockport in Oswego on Tuesday.
Collins tallied two goals in the contest, while Taylor Stein (Fr., Endwell, N.Y.) scored her first collegiate goal as the Lakers improved to 2-4 overall. The Golden Eagles fell to 1-6 overall on the season.
Head coach Brandi Ostrander's squad grabbed the early 1-0 lead when Kelly Collins scored from the top of the arc as her shot managed to trickle past Brockport goalkeeper Kasey Schreiner in the fourth minute of play. Oswego State controlled play in its offensive zone for the remainder of the first half. Midway through the period, Katie Mazuchowksi (So., Tonawanda, N.Y.) pushed the ball up the left side of the field. Mazuchowski's shot did not reach Schreiner, but Taylor Stein got her stick on the ball and found the back of the goal to give the Lakers a 2-0 lead.
The Golden Eagles came out with increased intensity as they put Oswego State on their heels in their defensive end. Brockport's best scoring change of the game up to this point came when Allyson Granish hit a hard shot towards the goal, but Keiley Cirillo (Jr., Gloversville, N.Y.) made the defensive save to preserve the shutout. However, Collins took the momentum away from the Golden Eagles when she scored her second goal of the game in the 48th minute to put the Lakers ahead 3-0. Michelle Ruskey (Fr., Deerfield, N.Y.) earned an assist on the goal. Brockport had two more quality scoring chances in the half, but Oswego goalkeeper Jamie Scharfe (Jr., Webster, N.Y.) and the defense was up to the test.
Scharfe made two saves to pick up her second win of the season, while Brockport's Schreiner stopped three shots in 49:20 and Jen Allen made one save in 20:40. The Lakers continue their current homestand with a non-conference match-up against Kean on Saturday at 1 p.m.
