Brandon Simpson hit a jump shot with three seconds remaining to give Geneseo a 68-66 victory over the visiting Oswego State men's basketball team on Friday night. The Lakers, who trailed by seven points with 2:24 remaining, made a valiant charge in the waning moments to tie the game at 66, but came up just short at the final buzzer. Simpson paced the Blue Knights with 22 points, and was one for four players to reach double-digits. Oswego State was paced by
Conor Monaghan, who poured in 12 points, followed by
Ryan Sheridan and
Stanley Francois, who score 11 points each.
Geneseo held a small, three-point 26-23 lead with 3:18 left in the first half before closing out the stanza on a 7-2 run for 33-25 halftime lead. John Scott scored five of his 11 points during the stretch for the Knights.
Geneseo maintained its advantage through the first ten minutes of the second half until a three-pointer from Conor Monaghan jump started a 9-0 Laker run that also included points from Hayden Ward, Ryan Sheridan, and Stanley Francois, giving the Knights a 49-48 lead. Geneseo countered with six straight points to build the lead back up to seven points at 55-48.
Oswego State continued to battle until a trey by Sean Michele with 11 seconds to play to tie the game for the first time since midway through the first half. On the ensuing possession, the Knights drove the ball up the court before Mike Baker dished to Brandon Simpson for the game-winning basket. The Lakers had one last chance, but were unable to send the contest into overtime.
The Lakers, who are now 9-7 overall and 4-6 in the league, will face Brockport on Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m. in Brockport.
