A balanced scoring attack helped the Oswego State women's basketball team start 2010 on a winning note as it defeated St. Lawrence 64-49 on Tuesday night in Canton, N.Y. Three Lakers scored 10 or more points, while every player that saw action contributed on the offensive end. Oswego State, which improved to 4-5 overall, also controlled the boards as it out-rebounded the Saints, who dropped to 8-2 overall, 48-37.

Neither squad scored in the first three minutes before a Kayla Ryan (So., Schaghticoke, N.Y.) shot from three-point range triggered a 10-1 run to give the Lakers a lead they would never relinquished.  Head coach Tracy Bruno's squad built a 14-point advantage before halftime, but St. Lawrence scored the final six points of the frame as Oswego State held a 27-19 lead.

The Saints cut the margin to four points as they scored four straight points of the second half to make the score 27-23.  However, a pair of baskets from Meagan Stover (Fr., Lake George, N.Y.) and a jumper by Rachel Kohrs (Sr., New Lebanon, N.Y.) stopped the run to help the Lakers regain a double-digit lead at 33-23 with 16:35 remaining in the game.  Midway through the half, Nysha Miller made a pair of free throws to bring St. Lawrence to within seven points at 42-35. That would be as close as they would come, though, as Oswego State went 8-of-11 from the charity stripe in the final 1:17 for the 65-49 victory.

Kayla Ryan paced the Lakers with 13 points followed by Colleen McCready (Jr., Pittsford, N.Y.) and Rachel Kohrs at 12 and 10 points, respectively.  Oswego State finished the contest shooting 36.2 percent (21-for-58), while the Saints were held to 30.2 percent on 16-for-53 shooting.  St. Lawrence's Katherine Edgerton led all scorers with 15 points, and was joined in double-figures by Abby Stanton.

The Lakers return to SUNYAC action on Saturday, Jan. 9 against Cortland at 6 p.m. in Oswego.
