Late Goal Sinks Women's Soccer In 2-1 Loss To St. Lawrence

Box Score

St. Lawrence's Brooke Hessney turned in her second goal of the game in the 84th minute to sink the Oswego State women's soccer team in a 2-1 loss at Canton on Tuesday.  Laker forward Nikki Liadka registered her sixth goal in three games to give Oswego State an early lead, but the Saints scored two unanswered goals for the win.  The Lakers fell to 5-8 overall, while St. Lawrence improved to 8-6 on the season.

Liadka capitalized on a turnover by the Saints' center back midway through the first half, put a move on the goalkeeper before shooting the ball into an empty net for her 12th goal of the season.  Six minutes later St. Lawrence leveled the game at 1-1 when Hessney pounced on a rebound in front of the net  after Stephanie Seyward's initial shot from outside of the box was stopped by Oswego State goalie Toby Klein.  The score remained knotted up at the break.

It was not until the 84th minute that another goal was scored.  Elena Rogers served a pass through the box to Hessney, who was in position to tap in the one-timer for the eventual game-winner.

The teams were nearly identical in shots as Oswego State recorded 15 compared to 17 for the opposition.  Klein suffered the loss after registering six saves, while the Saints' Abby van Geldern compiled four saves and allowed one goal in the first half.  Andrea Strauss earned the win for St. Lawrence by stopping three shots in the second half.

Oswego State will play its remaining five regular season contests at home beginning with a game against Brockport on Friday at 4 p.m.
