Utica scored a goal early and late in the first period as the Pioneers handed the Oswego State women's ice hockey team a 3-1 loss Saturday night in Oswego. Pioneer goaltender Marissa Hotaling stymied the Laker offense with 42 saves as Oswego State outshot the visitors 43-30. Darcy Hier led the way for Utica with a goal and an assist, while
Kathryn Sbrocchi tallied the lone Laker goal. Oswego State fell to 1-4-3 overall and 0-3-3 in the ECAC West. The Pioneers improved to 5-2-0 overall and 4-2-0 in the league.
Utica jumped out to an early lead at 1:51 when Carmen Johnson scored with assists going to Emily Russell and Meredith Tice. Near the end of the first period, the Lakers went on the power-play, but the Pioneers registered a short-handed goal from the stick of Darcy Hier to take a 2-0 lead into the locker room.
Like in Friday night's tilt, Oswego State came out with a renewed energy which culminated in 19 shots on goal in the period. One of those shots found its way into the back of the net with one second remaining on a power play. Defender
Kathryn Sbrocchi scored her first goal of the season at 10:21 with assists going to
Mackenzie Lee and
Jillian Bergeron to cut the deficit in half. However, Hotaling was able to maintain the lead for Utica by making 18 stops in the stanza.
Midway through the third frame, Becky Heim sealed the victory for the visitors with her first marker of the season. Hotaling finished the game with 42 saves, while Laker goaltender
Emi Williams made 27 saves on 30 shots.
The Lakers host non-conference Hamilton on Tuesday for a 7 p.m. contest at the Campus Center Arena.
