Box Score
Oneonta closed out the first half on a 13-3 run to build a 14-point halftime lead that was too much for the visiting Oswego State men's basketball team to overcome, as it fell to the Red Dragons 77-69 in a SUNYAC Quarterfinal game on Tuesday. All five Oneonta starters finished the game in double-figures, while
Chad Burridge (So., Hannibal, N.Y.) paced the Lakers with 17 points. Oswego State finished the season at 13-13 overall. The Red Dragons, who moved to 21-5 overall, will face Cortland on Friday.
Both squads traded three-pointers to start the game, but a lay-up by Brian Hooks gave Oneonta a lead it would keep the rest of the way. The Lakers stayed within striking distance after Hayden Ward (Fr., Montauk, N.Y.) nailed a three to make the score 23-19 with 6:34 to play in the first half. However, the Red Dragons closed out the stanza on the 13-3 stretch that gave them a 36-22 lead at intermission.
Oneonta pushed its advantage to 22 points with less than 14 minutes remaining, but Oswego State scored the next eight points, including a pair of free throws and a lay-up from Ryan Sheridan (So., Blauvelt, N.Y.), to cut the deficit to 14 points. Minutes later, two lay-ups from Stanley Francois (Sr., Valley Cottage, N.Y.) and a three-pointer from Jose Uribe (Jr., Queens, N.Y.) helped the Lakers pull to within nine points at 57-47 with 7:38 to play. Sean Michele (So., East Rochester, N.Y.) drained a trey in the final minute, but it would be too late as the Red Dragons went 4-for-4 from the charity stripe in the waning seconds for the win.
Michele joined Burridge in double-digits with 10 points, while the Oswego State bench outscored Oneonta 28-3. However, Brian Hooks and Brian Beckford poured in 20 points each and combined to grab 19 boards for the Red Dragons. Oneonta also went 30-for-46 from the free throw line compared to the Lakers going 11-for-22.
