Cortland Too Much For Field Hockey In 5-0 Loss

Box Score

Cortland opened up a three-goal first half lead that proved to be too much for the Oswego State field hockey team to overcome as it fell 5-0 to the fifth-ranked squad in the nation on Saturday afternoon in Cortland.  Brenda Semit recorded two goals for the Red Dragons, while teammate Sara Woodward added a goal and an assist.  Laker goalkeeper Jamie Scharfe turned away 13 shots in the losing effort as Oswego State dropped to 1-4 overall and 0-1 in SUNYAC play.  Cortland remained unbeaten at 6-0 overall and 1-0 in the league.

Head coach Brandi Ostrander's squad had an opportunity in the game's early stages to make the first strike, but Katie Mazuchowski's (Jr., Tonawanda, N.Y.) shot was cleared away at the goal line by a Red Dragon defender in the seventh minute.  The play energized Cortland as Danielle Groneman scored on a rebound just over two minutes later.  Semit put the Red Dragons ahead 2-0 when she found the inside right post on a long shot off of a penalty corner at the 14:33 mark.  Cortland took a 3-0 lead into intermission after Woodward converted a penalty stroke.

The Lakers had another golden chance to get on the scoreboard 16 minutes into the second half when sophomore Michelle Ruskey caused a turnover at the top of the arc.  She carried the ball in, ripped a shot on goal, but Red Dragon goalie Ashley Hughes came up with the save to preserve the shutout.  Cortland added two more goals before the end of the contest off the sticks of Semit and Sam George.

Scharfe made nine of her 13 saves in the second half as Oswego State was outshot by a 29-7 margin.  The Red Dragons also held a distinct advantage in penalty corners taking 18 compared to nine for the Lakers.

Oswego State will travel to Brockport to take on the Golden Eagles in a non-conference tilt Tuesday afternoon at 4 p.m.
