Women's Ice Hockey Hangs Tough In 2-1 Loss To No. 3 Plattsburgh

Box Score

Emi Williams recorded 34 saves to keep the Oswego State women's ice hockey team in the game against third-ranked Plattsburgh, but the Lakers came up short in a 2-1 road loss Saturday afternoon.  Oswego State, which dropped to 9-7-3 overall and 5-5-3 in the ECAC West standings, were 1-for-5 on the power play.  The Cardinals improved to 13-2-3 on the season and 9-1-2 in the league with the win.

In a clean first period, Plattsburgh got on the scoreboard at 8:04 when Kylie Klassen scored her sixth goal of the year with assists going to Erika Shaubel and Allison Era.  Williams went on to make 13 saves during the frame, and the Lakers appeared to be headed into the locker room facing a one-goal deficit, but the Cardinals received a goal from Katie Fairfield with 52 seconds left in the stanza to go ahead 2-0.

Physicality picked up in the second period as the squads combined to be whistled for eight penalties.  Oswego State capitalized on its third power-play opportunity of the game when Carly Henderson and Jillian Bergeron fed Brenna Weber on the point for her first goal of the season at 16:58.

In the third period, the Lakers pulled Williams with 51 seconds remaining for the extra attacker, but Oswego State was unable to level the score to force the game into regulation.

Williams finished the game with 34 saves in the losing effort, while Mandy Mackrell posted 19 saves for Plattsburgh.

The squads conclude the series on Sunday at 3 p.m. in Plattsburgh.
