Women's Ice Hockey Blanks Buffalo State 3-0; Clinches Playoff Bid

Box Score

Two empty-net third period goals sealed a 3-0 shutout victory for the Oswego State women's ice hockey team over Buffalo State on Senior Day at the Campus Center Arena on Saturday afternoon.  Senior Sarah Hannon finished with a goal and an assist, while classmate Emi Williams registered 14 saves for her third shutout of the season and seventh of her career.  The win bumped the Lakers' overall record to 11-8-3 and their conference record to 7-6-3, clinching a spot in the playoffs.  The Bengals dropped to 7-13-0 overall and 3-11-0 in the ECAC West standings.

After a scoreless first period, the pace and the physicality picked up in the second period.  The combination of both factors resulted in a pair of Oswego State penalties called at 11:16 in the frame, allowing Buffalo State a two-minute span with a 5-on-3 advantage.  However, the Laker penalty kill unit was extremely aggressive, resulting in a Bengal penalty with under a minute remaining in the power play.  Eight seconds after both Oswego State players were released from the box,  the Lakers caught Buffalo State in transition to create a two-skater rush.  Sarah Hannon took a shot that was stopped by Bengal netminder Alyssa Koniar's left pad, but the rebound was left for Kelly Collins on the doorstep for the empty-net goal at 13:24, giving Oswego State a 1-0 lead heading into the second intermission.

Midway through the third period, the Lakers were called for a penalty, resulting in Buffalo State pulling Koniar from the net in a move that paid off in Friday's contest.  Hannon caused a turnover at neutral ice between defenders, letting go of a shot that found the back of the empty net at 11:32 to put Oswego State ahead 2-0.  Following a Bengal timeout five minutes later, Koniar was pulled again in an effort to generate some offense, but the Lakers tacked on their second empty-net goal of the game when Olivia Boersen found Carly Henderson for the score at 16:59.  Koniar finished the contest with 31 saves.

Following the game, Oswego State recognized its' five seniors, Emily Grippin, Sarah Hannon, Brenna Weber, Emi Williams, and Meagan Big Snake for their contributions to the women's ice hockey program.

Next weekend the Lakers will travel to Rochester to face top-ranked RIT on Friday and Saturday.
