Field Hockey Drops Season-Opener 6-0 At William Smith

Box Score

The Oswego State field hockey team allowed three goals in a six-minute span late in the first half en route to a 5-0 halftime deficit that it was unable to overcome in a 6-0 loss to William Smith in Geneva Thursday evening.  Taylor Cappello registered four goals and one assist in the victory for the Herons, who start the season at 1-0.  The Lakers (0-1) start the home portion of their schedule on Saturday at 1 p.m. when they host Houghton College.

Cappello found Annie Kietzman open in front of the net for the game's opening goal 4:37 into the contest.  Cappello netted her first goal of the game in the 11th minute when she got her own rebound past Oswego State goalkeeper Julie Janusz (Sr., Auburn, N.Y.) for a 2-0 lead.  The score stood until Margaret McConnell's long-range shot started a late flurry for William Smith.  Cappello went on to two goals before the end of the half to give the Herons a five-goal lead at the break, as William Smith owned a 14-4 advantages in shots.

The Lakers cut down on the number of Heron offensive opportunities in the second half, but Cappello tacked on her final marker of the game with 22:43 remaining in the contest.

Janusz registered five saves in the loss, while Taryn Little and Catherine Hare combined to make three saves for the shutout.
