The Oswego State field hockey team put an end to its losing skid with a 1-0 victory over Brockport in the consolation final of the Nazareth College Tournament Sunday morning. With the win the Lakers moved to 2-3 on the season, and will open their SUNYAC regular season schedule on the road in Geneseo on Friday afternoon at 4 p.m.
The Lakers played a well-rounded game en route to their second win of the season. Despite not being able to find the back of the net in the first half of play, the Lakers managed to outplay their opponents throughout the half. Oswego State held significant advantages in all statistical categories, outshooting Brockport 8-3 in the first stanza and holding the edge in penalty corners 9-1.
In the second half, Oswego State finally managed to get past Brockport's goaltender in the 44th minute. Scoring for the Lakers was Katie Mazuchowski (Sr., Tonawanda, N.Y.) on a pass from classmate Jordan McGuire (Macedon, N.Y.). The goal made Mazuchowski the squad's leading scorer, as she recorded her fifth point of the season.
Much like the first half, Oswego State continued to control the game as they outshot Brockport 10-7 in the second frame. Although it did not manage to find the back of the net again, Oswego State walked away from the game with a 1-0 victory.
Senior goalkeeper Julie Janusz (Auburn, N.Y.) posted her second shutout of the season after recording three saves for the win to move to 2-3. Kasey Schreiner registered nine saves in the loss for Brockport and moved to 2-2 for the season.
