Field Hockey Suffers Overtime Defeat at Geneseo

Box Score

The Oswego State field hockey team opened conference play with a 2-1 overtime loss to Geneseo on Friday afternoon. Katie Farley scored five minutes into overtime to give the Blue Knights the victory following a penalty corner.  The Lakers moved to 2-4 overall and 0-1 in the SUNYAC, while Geneseo improved to 4-1 on the season and 1-0 in the league.

The Lakers began the day coming off a road win versus Brockport, but Oswego State was not able to carry that momentum into the start of SUNYAC play. The first half began with the Lakers unable to penetrate the Knights defense, resulting in only recording one shot in the course of the half. Despite outshooting the Lakers 3-1 in the first half, Geneseo was also unable to find the back of the net in the first frame.

The second half did not begin in favor of the Lakers as Geneseo managed to gain the game's first lead. In the 38th minute, the Knights managed to solve Laker goalkeeper Julie Janusz (Sr., Auburn, N.Y.) as Kayla DeAngelis converted a rebound for a 1-0 edge.

The goal jumpstarted the Oswego State offense as it managed to find the back of the net a mere two minutes after the Geneseo tally. In the 40th minute Jess Felice (Jr., Endicott, N.Y.) beat Knight goalkeeper Caitlyn Dowell on a crossing pass from Aislinn Breslin (Jr., Carmel, N.Y.). The goal was Felice”s first goal on the season.

The second half ended with neither team being able to find the back of the net, and for the second time this season Oswego State headed to overtime. The Knights held the advantage in both shots and penalty corners, outshooting the Lakers 5-1 in the second-half, and being awarded eight penalty corners to the Lakers' six.

In the extra frame, Oswego State had the first two scoring chances starting with a shot by Kelly Collins (Sr., Fairport, N.Y.) that was stopped by Rachel Atkins. Geneseo found the back of the net first, though, recording the game-winning goal in the 75th minute when Farley beat Janusz on a tipped shot on a crossing pass from Atkins.

The Lakers continue conference play with another road game on Saturday at Brockport at 1 p.m.
