New Paltz's Lauren Link registered her second goal of the game in the 65th minute to break a tie game, as the Oswego State field hockey team lost 2-1 Friday afternoon at South Athletic Field.
Kelly Collins (Sr., Fairport, N.Y.) put the Lakers ahead in the 28th minute, but the Hawks battled back with a pair of second-half goals from Link.
Oswego State, which dropped to 2-8 overall and 0-3 in the SUNYAC standings, will host a Stick It To Cancer game against Oneonta Saturday at 1 p.m. New Paltz improved to 4-5 on the year and 2-1 in the league.
Kelly Collins opened up a scoreless game late in the first half when Hawk keeper Antonija Pjetri came out to steer away an errant ball. Collins gained control, and ripped a shot into the left side of the cage 27:38 into the game. It marked her fourth goal of the season. The Lakers maintained the lead at intermission in a back-and-forth affair as both squads combined for 13 shots.
New Paltz quickly evened the contest in the second half when Lauren Link capitalized on a flurry of action in front of Oswego State goalkeeper
Julie Janusz (Sr., Auburn, N.Y.). Link was sitting in position near the left post and put away the ball for her second goal of the year less than seven minutes into the half.
With the score level, both squads pushed the ball up and down the field in an effort to post the game-winning goal. It was not until 5:25 remained in the game that Link received a touch pass from Alyssa Stock near the left post again for the game winner. The Lakers pressured the defense in the final minutes of the game, and, as a result, received their fifth penalty corner of the half after time expired. Oswego State was unable to maintain control of the ball before it got a shot off, as New Paltz came away with the win.
Janusz finished the game with six saves, while Pjetri posted three stops for the win.
