Women's Soccer Earns First Conference Win in 2-1 Triumph over Potsdam

Box Score

Oswego State forward Shelly Bateman (Jr., Fulton, N.Y.) registered a goal and an assist and forward Nikki Liadka (So., Liverpool, N.Y.) scored her 10th goal of the season as the Lakers earned their first conference victory of the season, defeating Potsdam 2-1 on Friday afternoon at Laker Field.

The Laker defense held the Bears shotless over the first 87 minutes and allowed just one shot for the entire game. Oswego State outshot Potsdam 19-1 for the game and 8-0 in the first half.

After over 41 minutes of scoreless play, Liadka broke through for the Lakers at 41:17, capitalizing on a centering pass from Bateman. Bateman dribbled into the box down the right side of the field before being swarmed by three Potsdam defenders. Bateman found Liadka in the center of the box, who fired a shot on net that deflected off of Potsdam goalie Katrina Rowland and into the back of the net. The Lakers held a one-goal lead at halftime, registering four shots on goal.

In the second half, Oswego State took a two-goal lead on Bateman's fifth goal of the season at 69:53. Bateman dribbled the ball just outside of the box before placing a 20-foot shot just over the outstretched glove of Rowland and into the top center portion of the goal.

Potsdam's only shot of the game came off the foot of Ashley Thayer with 2:17 to play in regulation, which resulted in the Bears' only goal of the game. The scoring play was the result of a corner kick taken by Potsdam's Heather Johnson. Thayer was able to connect on a shot that deflected off of the crossbar and bounced straight down over the line for the goal.

Midfielders Laura Ambron (Sr., Fishkill, N.Y.) and Bri Dolan (Fr., Fayetteville, N.Y.) each recorded two shots on goal for the Lakers. Defenders Raquel Vescio (So., Fulton, N.Y.), Stephanie San Antonio (Sr., Plainview, N.Y.), Liz Conrad (Sr., Jackson, N.J.) and Alexa Bieber (Sr., Slingerlands, N.Y.) all played well on the defensive end, limited Potsdam to one shot and two corner kicks.

With the win, the Lakers improved to 7-3-0 overall and 1-2-0 in conference play, while the loss dropped the Bears to 3-3-2 overall and 0-2-0 in conference play.

Rowland finished with eight saves on 10 shots faced, while Oswego State goalkeeper Emily Varonier (Jr., Miller Place, N.Y.) allowed a goal on the only shot she faced.

The Lakers continue conference play on Saturday when they take on rival Plattsburgh at 1 p.m. at Laker Field.
