Box Score

Despite two late second half goals, the Oswego State women's soccer team was unable to complete a furious rally, falling to Hamilton College, 3-2, in double overtime on Tuesday at Laker Field.

Hamilton's Hannah Nekoroski netted the game-winning goal with 3:30 remaining in double overtime to give the Continentals the victory in their season opener. Seconds earlier, Hamilton's Emi Birch fired a shot that deflected off the crossbar and landed at the feet of Nekoroski, who beat Oswego State goaltender Emily Varonier (Jr., Miller Place, N.Y.) to end the game.

Trailing 2-0 with less than 20 minutes remaining in regulation, the Lakers received goals from forward Nikki Liadka (So., Liverpool, N.Y.) and midfielder Kassie Kleine (Jr., Cazenovia, N.Y.) in a time span of 1:02 to tie the game.

Oswego State got on the board at 71:17 when Liadka blasted a shot from 20 yards out that ricocheted off the crossbar before spinning back into the net past Hamilton goalkeeper Melanie Miller. The goal was Liadka's sixth in three games. Defender Raquel Vescio (So., Fulton, N.Y.) was credited with the assist.

Kleine's second goal of the season at 72:19 tied the game at two. Midfielder Carly Olds (Jr., Andover, N.Y.) set up the scoring play with a service into the box that found Kleine in front of the net on the right side. Kleine connected on the pass and beat Miller on the near side post.

The Lakers thought they had won the game in the early moments of double overtime when defender Liz Conrad (Sr., Jackson, N.J.) appeared to have scored on a pass from Liadka, but Conrad was ruled offside by the side judge.

The Lakers had a number of scoring opportunities in the first half, but it was the Contenintals that capitalized on their opportunities. Alex Rimmer scored at 32:51 to break the scoreless tie on a shot from 20 yards out placed over the head of Varonier to give Hamilton the lead. Rimmer's goal was the only shot on goal for Hamilton in the first half.

Oswego State forward Shelly Bateman (Jr., Fulton, N.Y.) had a few scoring chances during the first half, but saw her shots go just wide or just high of the net.

Hamilton took a two-goal lead with 21:08 remaining in regulation when Charlotte Cosgrove scored on a shot from 22 yards out that again went over the head of Varonier and into the net near the far side post. Erica Skinner was credited with the assist on Hamilton's second goal of the game.

Rimmer nearly had the game-winning goal with less than five minutes remaining in regulation, but her shot from inside the box went just high of the Oswego State net. Hamilton also nearly decided the game in the first overtime after Varonier had a shot go through her hands in front of traffic, but before the ball could fully slide across the goal line, the Laker defense was able to clear the ball out of the box.

Varonier finished the game with seven saves on 10 shots in a losing effort for the Lakers.  Miller, who replaced starting goaltender Liza Gergenti, earned the win in net for Hamilton, stopping two of four shots faced. Gergenti finished with two saves as well.

With the loss the Lakers dropped to 2-1-0, while Hamilton moves to 1-0-0. Oswego State returns to action on Friday, Sept. 10, at 4 p.m. when the team hosts D'Youville at Laker Field.
