Women's Ice Hockey Blanks Chatham, 10-0

Box Score

PITTSBURGH -- The Oswego State women's ice hockey team scored a 10-0 win with four power-play goals against Chatham to start the 2012 part of their season.  The win lifted the Lakers, 6-5-2 overall and 5-2-2 in conference, into a third-place tie with idle Elmira in the ECAC West standings, while Chatham fell to 0-7.

Carly Henderson (So., Markham, Ont.), Megan Howe (So., Stratford, Ont.), Mackenzie Lee (Sr., Caledonia, N.Y.) and Emma Smetaniuk (So., Frankford, Ont.) each scored two goals, while Catherine Cote (So., Val D'Or, Que.) recorded the shutout in goal for Oswego.

Oswego opened the scoring with a power-play goal by Megan Howe. Howe lit the lamp at 4:37 in the first with an assist from Chelsey Draker (Fr., Listowel, Ont.).  Carly Henderson scored unassisted minutes later at 8:21 in the first when she pounced on a loose puck deep in the Chatham zone and her shot trickled through the legs of Cougar netminder Kaitlynn Smith to make the score 2-0.

Good puck movement led to the Lakers' third goal, at 10:57 in the first. Olivia Boersen (So., Stratford, Ont.) found Howe behind the net, and she put a pass on the stick of Smetaniuk, who put a shot home from close range for a 3-0 Laker lead.

Henderson banged home a rebound at 15:11 for her second goal, and the Lakers' fourth. Jillian Bergeron (Sr., Brockville, Ont.) and Carly Marchment (Fr., Courtice, Ont.) received credit for assists.

The Lakers broke the game wide open in the second with four goals, as three came on the power play. Mackenzie Lee put Oswego up 5-0 with a power-play marker at 12:19 in the second, with Boersen on the assist.

The sixth goal came when Leah McNaughton (Sr., Embro, Ont.), who transferred from Chatham to Oswego two seasons ago, carried the puck up the right side and fired a sharp pass to Kelly Collins (Sr., Fairport, N.Y.), who rocketed a shot in for the 6-0 lead at 14:03 in the second.

Howe picked up her second goal, and her team's seventh, at 16:38 in the second, tipping in a goal from the left of the net with an assist from Smetaniuk.

The teammates reversed roles on the Lakers' eighth goal, also on the power play, as Howe's shot from the right of the goal deflected to Smetaniuk, who hit the back of the net. Emily Marks (Fr., Courtice, Ont.) also received credit for an assist.

Mady Paul (So., Incline Village, Nevada) tallied Oswego's ninth goal at 11:57 in the third. Paul scored unassisted, corralling a loose puck near the left circle and shooting it in goal.

Lee closed the scoring with her second goal, coming 16:32 in the third period. Lee fired a shot from the right side of the ice to the top left corner of the goal, with Kathryn Sbrocchi (Sr., Mississauga, Ont.) and Jocelyn St. Clair (So., Cambridge, Ont.) earning assists.

Oswego State finished 4-for-8 on the power play, with Chatham 0-for-7 with the extra skater. Cote made eight saves for the win to raise her record to 4-4-1 overall. Smith made 47 saves on 57 shots for the Cougars.

The two teams meet again at 2 p.m. again Saturday at Shady Side Academy in Pittsburgh.
