Oswego, N.Y. – The Oswego State women's ice hockey team opened its season with a win Saturday, shutting out New England College 5-0 in the Oswego State Classic.
This was the first- season opening victory for the team since 2010 when it beat the Aurora Panthers, 6-2.
Oswego jumped out to an early lead when senior captain
Olivia Boersen scored her first goal of the season at 5:03 in the first period.
Chelsea Hunt and
Brennan Butler assisted Boersen with the score.
Two freshmen scored the first goal of their college careers at in the second.
Bridget Hamlin scored at 8:36 off of an assist from fellow freshman
Ashley Lyman.
Erika Truschke scored an unassisted goal at 17:49 to extend the Lakers' lead to 3-0.
Another freshman scored her first colligate goal in the final period of the game. Lyman scored at 2:01 with an assist from Truschke.
At 5:37, New England's Jamie Tabb was given a two-minute penalty for roughing. Boersen scored her second goal of the season at 7:00, utilizing Oswego's power play advantage.
Emma Smetaniuk and
Melissa Seamont assisted her with the score. Boersen's goal made was the final score of the contest.
Oswego outshot New England 48-11 in the game. They won 46-of-74 face-offs in the game.
The Lakers will return to action on at 3 p.m. on Sunday when they finish out the Oswego State Classic against Castleton State.
