Oswego Puts up a Fight Against Nationally-Ranked Cortland

Oswego, N.Y. – The Oswego State field hockey team gave a solid effort in a 7-2 loss in its home opener against No. 18 SUNY Cortland. It was also a "Totally Teal," event to support ovarian cancer awareness. Mary Gosek, an ovarian cancer survivor and wife of men's ice hockey head coach Ed Gosek, conducted a ceremonial ball drop and midfield with captains from the Lakers and Red Dragons.

With the loss, Oswego falls to 2-4 overall and 1-1 in the SUNYAC while Cortland improves to 5-2, 2-0.

Less than a day after the Red Dragons tied a single-game record with 15 goals against Morrisville State, the Lakers found a way to hold down the Cortland offense for most of the day. Despite taking 17 penalty corners, Cortland only scored seven times due to the Oswego defense a goalkeeping.

Grace Lombardi got the start in goal and saved nine shots in the contest.

On the offensive end, Grace Rinaldi scored a goal off a pass from Ashley Fiorille. Fiorille boosted her numbers in the aiding category as she currently ranks fifth in the nation.

The Lakers added another goal in the second half when they earned a penalty stroke. Ashley Collins took the attempt, lifting a shot past the left side of the keeper.

Oswego will return to action at 4 p.m. on Tuesday when it hosts Elmira College for a nonconference matchup.
