Oswego's Playoff Preview: Notes and Links

OSWEGO, N.Y. – The playoff run begins this week for three Oswego State Laker teams. All three teams gained home court/ice advantage for the first round of playoffs.

The No. 4-seeded men's basketball will start the week off at 7 p.m. on Tuesday in Max Ziel Gymnasium as the Lakers host No.5 Cortland. The Lakers finished the regular season 16-9 overall and 10-8 in SUNYAC play while Cortland finished 14-11, 9-9.

Oswego and Cortland faced each other twice in the regular season with the Lakers sweeping the Red Dragons. The first matchup was a dominating defensive performance from Oswego, defeating Cortland 60-41. Cortland's 41 points was its worst offensive output in over 17 years. This past weekend the Lakers were able to outlast the Red Dragons 78-76 in overtime to clinch the fourth seed in the SUNYAC Championship. The winner of Tuesday's game will advance to a SUNYAC semifinal which will be held at top-seeded Brockport on Friday evening.

The men's hockey will play in the SUNYAC Championship at 7p.m. on Wednesday in the Campus Center Ice Arena. Oswego earned the No. 3 seed and will host No. 6 Fredonia. The two teams have tense history together when it comes to SUNYAC Championship play. It seems to be a norm these teams will face each other as the Lakers and the Blue Devils have met two of the past three postseasons.

Oswego and Fredonia have already met twice in the regular season in 2013-14; splitting the games. Back in November, Fredonia beat Oswego 3-2 in overtime during the season-opener. The Lakers returned the favor as they traveled to Fredonia in January to beat the Blue Devils 5-1. The winner of Wednesday's contest will advance to the SUNYAC semifinal at 7 p.m. on Saturday.

On Saturday, the women's ice hockey team will compete in the ECAC West Championship after setting its best season record in the program's history. The No. 3-seeded Lakers will face No. 6 Buffalo State at 3p.m. in the Campus Center for the first round game. In the 2013-14 season, the squads have faced each other twice. The Lakers defeated the Bengals in both games, 3-0, on the road. The winner of this game will move on to the semifinals on Saturday, March 9.
