BOX SCORECASTLETON, Vt. – The Oswego State women's soccer team used
Emma Geyer's goal in the 81st minute to move past Rutgers-Camden 2-1 in the Rutland Herald Invitational held by Castleton State College. With the victory, the Lakers improve to 1-1 on the year while Raptors fall to 0-2.
Oswego never trailed in the contest, outshot Rutgers-Camden 29-8 and controlled the pace of play throughout.
The Lakers came out the aggressor and was rewarded in the eighth minute. On the team's second corner kick, the ball dropped to Nicolette LaRosa and she put a shot on net but it was deflected out by Rutgers-Camden defender Stephanie Rodriguez. The ball bounced off a few players before landing on the foot of
Tia Segretto, who finished off the shot for the 1-0 lead that lasted through halftime.
Just three minutes into the second half, a Laker defensive miscue helped the Scarlet Knights get on the board. Oswego failed to clear the ball cleanly and the ball fell to Kaitlyn Zuzulock at the near corner of the 18. The sophomore chipped the ball over the goalie and the defense to tie the game at one apiece.
With time winding down, Oswego capitalized off the foot of
Emma Geyer. The freshman received the ball and lofted it from 30 yards out past the outstretched arms of Brannigan before finding the back of the net. Geyer's was not only her first at the collegiate level, but proved to be the game-winner as well.
Alyssa Glasshagel earned the win in net and was credited with three saves in 90 minutes of work.
The Lakers will be back on the pitch at 4 p.m. on Tuesday when they host Hamilton College on Laker Soccer Field.
