Lakers Defeat St. Michael's; Extend Win Streak

OSWEGO, N.Y. – The Oswego State women's ice hockey team defeated St. Michael's College 3-1 this afternoon in the final game of the St. Michael's Doubletree Ice Hockey Classic in Colchester Vt. With the win, the Lakers record improves to 9-2 on the year and the team extends its win streak to seven in a row. St. Michael's drops to 2-10 on the season.

It was a slow start to the game, as neither team could find the back of the net during the first period. Oswego was applying pressure though, leading the Purple Knights 15-2 in shots on goal after the first 20 minutes.

St. Michael's came into the second period a new team, scoring the game's first goal at the 9:06 mark. The Purple Knights were able to keep the Lakers off the board for the rest of the period.

With only 5:34 left in the game, Kendall Appelbaum passed the puck to Lizzy Marks who was finally able to put one away for Oswego, tying the game up at one goal a-piece. The Lakers didn't waste any time finding the net again, as just 19 seconds later Bridget Hamlin ripped a shot from the blue line that was blocked by a St. Michael's defender.  The puck fell in front of Ashley Lyman who was able to slip it past the tender for the go-ahead goal. Lizzy Marks notched her second point as she added an insurance goal on an empty net with 28 seconds left.

Minding the net for the Lakers was Tori Trovato, who ended the game with 19 saves.

At the conclusion of the tournament, Marks and Alli Ullrich were both selected to the All-Tournament team.

Women's ice hockey will return home at 7 p.m. on Friday as they host ECAC West rival Chatham.
