Game Recap: Men's Ice Hockey |

Power-Play Goal Gives Lakers First Win

OSWEGO, N.Y. – The Oswego State ice hockey team earned its first SUNYAC victory of the year, taking down Brockport 2-0 Saturday night at the Marano Campus Center Arena. With the win, the Lakers improve to 1-0-1 overall and in the SUNYAC. Brockport moves to 1-1-0.

With a scoreless first period, Oswego tallied the game's first goal on a strange turn of events. The course of events began after Brockport's Zac Sikich was issued a five-minute interference call with 6:55 remaining in the period. During the power-play, a Golden Eagle forward stole the puck from Stephen Johnson at center ice and found himself streak towards Laker goalie Matt Zawadzki uncontested. Zawadzki charged the player, dove face first and knocked the puck aside while also losing his own stick in the process. The Brockport player to recovered the puck and swung it to a teammate who missed on an open net as the Laker tendy was still out of his crease. Oswego's Matt Galati recovered the missed shorthand opportunity and outletted it to Shawn Hulshof who took it up the boards only to find himself in on a two-on-one with Kenny Niel. The junior then sent a perfect pass across the goal mouth, where Neil slipped it past the goaltender before he could reach the post. The Lakers would then take its one-goal lead into the intermission.

The Lakers second goal came with six seconds to go in regulation as Mitchell Herlihey muscled the puck away from a defender in the offensive zone and scored on an empty net.

Zawadzki played all 60 minutes for the Lakers, stopping 15 shots and picking up his first shutout of the season (seventh of his career).

Men's ice hockey returns to action with more SUNYAC play as it heads to Cortland for game at 7 p.m. on Friday.
