Breakaway Goal Leads to First Conference Win

CORTLAND, N.Y. - The Oswego State women's ice hockey team earned its first conference victory of the season, defeating Cortland 4-2 on the road Sunday afternoon. With the win, the Lakers improve to 2-1-1 on the season and 1-0-1 in the ECAC West. Cortland drops to 1-2-1 overall, 0-1-1 in the conference.

Ashley Lyman recorded the game-winning goal during the third but Brianna Rice deserves just as much of the credit. The junior forward placed a crisp outlet pass from the Lakers defensive zone that sprung Lyman in on a breakaway. The Lockport, N.Y. made easy work of the opportunity, beating the goaltender glove side and giving Oswego 3-2 lead with 13:53 to go in the game.

Going back to the first, in what seemed was going to be a scoreless period, the Lakers were able to cash one in with 1:11 left on the clock. On the power play, Olivia Ellis was able to gain the zone and drive it up the sideboards. She then dropped the puck to Brianna McFall who slid a quick pass to Kendall Appelbaum. Appelbaum cocked back her stick and fired a shot that beat the Cortland goaltender, giving the Lakers a 1-0 lead going into the first intermission.

Oswego would give up two early goals in the second, only to have Rachel Lenard tie it up at the 9:54 mark. Alli Ullrich began the play taking a clapper from the blueline. Lenard, while screening the goalie, was able to tip it into the back of the net. The score would remain even going into the third.

Lizzy Marks would go on to add an insurance empty-netter with 10 seconds left in regulation.

Tori Trovato got the nod in between the pipes for Oswego, stopping a season-high 28 on the day.

Women's ice hockey returns to action at 3 p.m. on Saturday as the team hosts ECAC West-rival Utica at the Marano Campus Center Arena.
