Lakers Go 1-1 in Final Games of Spring Break

CLERMONT, Fla. – The Oswego State softball team split its two games in its last day of play in Florida. The Lakers defeated the University of Scranton 3-2 in the first contest on Tuesday before falling to Clarkson University 12-2 later that same day. Oswego will end its Spring Break trip with a record of 3-5.

Game 1

Oswego found itself down right away, as Scranton scored two runs in the top of the first inning. The Lakers responded well though, scoring two of their own to close out the inning with a tie score. The first run was provided by Jessie Terrano, who scored from second on a Tori Trovato fly out to centerfield. The second run of the stanza was recorded by Melanie Klauser who was knocked in by an Ashley Lyman double.

It was in the third that Oswego scored the third and eventual game-winning run. Katie Heselden hit a leadoff single and proceeded to steal second as Terrano was at the plate. Terrano would then single into right field on that same at-bat, allowing Heselden to cross the plate. The score would remain the same for the rest of the game, securing the Lakers third win of the season.

Lisa O'Callaghan earned the victory as she pitched her third complete game of the trip. The junior allowed only seven hits while also striking out three.

Game 2

In a reflection the earlier days game, the Lakers gave up three runs to find themselves in a hole early. The team battled though, shrinking the Golden Knights lead to 3-1 in the third inning. Alexandria Connelly hit a single into left field, which drove home Noelle White and edged the Lakers closer to the lead.

Clarkson's bats really woke up in the fifth and sixth innings, scoring eight runs and giving the Golden Knights a sizeable 12-1 lead.

Oswego was able to tag on another run in the sixth as Gabriella Vertuccio doubled in Sam Scott, but the Lakers were unable to close the deficit.

Connelly began on the mound for Oswego, hurling 4.1 innings before getting relieved by Alexis Nasca. Nasca finished the contest with two strikeouts.

Softball will resume play back in New York as the team hosts Oneonta for a doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m. on March 27.
