Lakers Complete Sweep; Stay Perfect in SUNYAC

ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. – The Oswego State baseball team remained unbeaten in conference play with a sweep of Plattsburgh on Monday afternoon during a neutral site doubleheader held at Bard College. With the pair of wins, the Lakers improve to 13-4 overall and 6-0 in SUNYAC action while the Cardinals go to 7-11, 2-4.

GAME ONE – OSWEGO 4, PLATTSBURGH 0:

Oswego would get all it would need in the first inning, as Myles Kutscher singled up the middle to score Dan Saccocio, which proved to be the game-winning run. On the play, Wes Randall advanced to third and scored during the next at-bat as Jordan Giller doubled to left field.

Two innings later, Giller again drove in a run, this time plating Kutscher. Two hitters later, senior Kyle Liner smashed a double to left center to send Giller home for the Lakers' fourth and final tally.

Miles Kelly threw a complete-game shutout for his third win of the year. The junior scattered eight hits over seven innings of work, striking out six Cardinal batters. On the year, Kelly now holds a 3-1 record.

Kutscher and Giller both finished 2-for-4 with a run scored. Giller also had two RBI and two doubles while Kutscher tripled and drove in a run. Saccocio, Liner and Robert Donnelly each had a hit.

GAME TWO – OSWEGO 8, PLATTSBURGH 4:

The Lakers used several late inning surges to put Plattsburgh away in the night cap. Trailing 3-1 heading into the sixth inning, Oswego tied the game with two runs in the top of the frame. The squad then added three in the seventh, one in the eighth and another in the ninth, pushing the Laker advantage to 8-3 before the Cardinals added one run in their final at-bat.

Mickey Putillo earned his third save of the year and second in as many days, coming in during the ninth with the tying run at the plate. Plattsburgh had scored a run and loaded the bases before the senior entered the game. Putillo forced a double play right back to the mound, throwing the runner at third out at the plate before Alex Brown tossed out the batter at first. The battery mates then got a ground out to Brown who tagged the hitter for the game's final out.

Kutscher continued his great day in the second game, racking up six RBI on 2-for-3 from the plate. Both of the sophomore's hits were two-baggers.  The other two Oswego RBI came from Donnelly and Eric Hamilton, each driving in one.

Saccocio also stayed hot in the final game of the three-game series, going 2-for-4 with three runs scored. Randall drew three walks at the plate while registering two runs on a 1-for-2 performance.

Tim Cronin got the start and was the pitcher of record when the Lakers took the lead, earning the sophomore a win for a 2-0 mark on the season. Charles Arcuri and Pat Brown combined to throw the next three innings, not allowing a run and each recording two strikeouts in the relief efforts.

Oswego's next game is scheduled for 3 p.m. on Friday at New Paltz as the conference slate continues.
