Lakers Lose Both Matches at SUNY Canton Invite

CANTON, N.Y. – The Oswego State volleyball team lost two matches at SUNY Canton on Saturday. Its first match was a 3-2 (25-17, 25-27, 25-23, 20-25, 11-15) falter to Lebanon Valley College before dropping a 3-1 (21-25, 25-22, 24-26, 15-25) contest to the host Kangaroos. Oswego's pair of defeats leaves its overall record at 12-11.

Seniors Emma Moriarty and Megan Russell led the Laker attack with 12 kills apiece while Laura Finn chipped in eight in the Lebanon match. Freshman Julia Flohr made her presence known with 20 assists, seven digs and three service aces. She trailed senior Lauren Edwards in the assist department (23) and Rina Qelaj (16) and Moriarty (14) in passing. Moriarty tied Flohr with three aces but both were one back of team-leader Edwards. On defense, Russell paced Oswego with four blocks while Lauren Fie (3) and Sarah Massie (2) combined for five.

Sophomore Ariel Murawski helped in the match with Canton, collecting steam-highs with 10 kills and two aces. Fie was just one shy of the team-high while Ariana Wright attacked eight attempts successfully. Flohr matched her assist total from earlier in the day while Lindsey Champitto had the Lakers' second-most helpers against the Kangaroos (14).

The blocks match-high was held by Alison Sullivan, finishing with seven. Finn and Isabella Winklestine each had two. Passing duties were owned by Qelaj with her team-high 15 while Sarah Braddon (10) and Flohr (9) paired for 19.

Oswego will have another nonconference tune-up at 5 p.m. on Wednesday at Wells College before traveling to Fredonia for conference pool play over the weekend.
