Game Recap: Women's Ice Hockey |

Oswego Outlasts Castleton To Improve To 2-0

CASTLETON, Vt. -- The Oswego State women's ice hockey team improved to 2-0 on the season with a 4-3 win over the host Castleton University Spartans on Saturday afternoon. While the Lakers stay perfect on the young season, the Spartans fall to 0-1.

After a scoreless first 30 minutes, where both squads looked to get a grip on the others gameplan, Oswego tallied three scores in the second frame and eventually one in the third to secure the victory.

Alexa Aramburu began the scoring just over 10 minutes into the second frame. She received a pass from Alli Ullrich who got the puck from Olivia Ellis to earn her first goal of the season. Ullrich posted what is already her third assist of the season, while Ellis added her second.

Not even a minute later, Ellis gave Oswego a 2-0 lead after rocketing one past the goaltender. Aramburu and Kendall Appelbaum were credited with the helper. The final goal of the period and of the three-minute onslaught was added by Jacquelin White at 13:01. The freshman tallied her third goal of the season--and of her career--after corralling and scoring two in the Lakers win over New England College on Friday.

In the third stanza, Castleton turned the tables slightly with three goals in as many minutes, due to two power play opportunities. Yet, it was still Oswego who would have the last laugh, as Appelbaum scored the game-winner at 12:31 into the period. Ellis provided the helper on this goal as well, to record her second of the day and third point in the game.

Mariah Madrigal played the entire game in goal to earn her first win of the season, while tallying 17 saves.

Oswego recorded 40 shots-on-goal for the second day in a row. It racked up 41 such shots on Friday evening.

The Lakers will return to the home ice at the Marano Campus Center Arena at 7 p.m. on Friday to host ECAC West foe Chatham University.
