MEADVILLE, Pa. – The Oswego State women's basketball team fell 55-54 to Grove City College in its first game of the Allegheny College Greg Richards '08 Memorial Tip-Off classic. Oswego is now 0-2 on the season, while Grove City improves to 1-1.
Oswego fell victim to a 10-1 run to close the game by the Wolverines, including a last-second layup by Grove City's Laura Buchanan. The Lakers led the game since early in the first quarter, grabbing a 28-22 halftime lead and a 43-34 advantage through three quarters of play.
Three Lakers finished the contest in double-digits with
Courtney Ameele (17),
Mary Mazzella (14) and
Heather Hebert (12) scoring 43 points combined. The trio shot a combined 18-for-38 (47.4%) in the game. Hebert also nabbed seven rebounds as part of her effort in 32 minutes played.
The Lakers struggled with turnovers (18) throughout, although still maintaining an advantage in the category by one. Oswego also outshot Grove City as a team, recording a 42.6 shooting percentage from the field, compared to the opposing 36.8%. Lastly, in the paint, it was all Oswego with a 10-point advantage over the four quarters (36-26).
Women's basketball returns to the hardwood at 3 p.m. on Saturday for a contest against the host Allegheny Gators.
