Lakers Fall On A Free Throw In Final Seconds

OSWEGO, N.Y. -- The Oswego State women's basketball team dropped a nail-biter to the Buffalo State Bengals, 67-66 on Saturday afternoon as the Lakers could not find the basket with time running out. With the loss Oswego falls to 3-17 and 1-12 in the SUNYAC and Buffalo State improves to 9-12 and 5-9 in the conference.

As the time approached zeros Tayler Sorell cut through the lane between two Bengals defenders and launched up a jumper, which hit just to the right of the rim.

Sorell, who was honored prior to the senior day contest for her outstanding achievements, scored 21 points to propel the Lakers. The Hannibal, N.Y. native hit five 3-pointers and all four free throws she attempted.

Courtney Ameele had a solid performance from behind the arc, going 4-for-5 (80%) including hitting the game-tying 3-pointer with less than 20 seconds remaining. The sophomore sank four shots from inside the three-point line as well to bring her final tally to 20 along with seven boards.

The Lakers had a six point lead at half before they surrendered it on a 15-3 run to open the second half for the Bengals. Yet, Oswego did not Buffalo State to get out of reach and they climbed back into it.

Zana Dillard fell three boards short of yet another double-double as she notched 13 points on the afternoon.

In the rebound department Mary Mazzella led the Lakers with 12, falling just short of her career-high 14 boards in a game against Fredonia in 2015.

The Lakers will head on the road for their next game as the take on the Hawks of New Paltz beginning at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
