Lakers Down Wellesley After Falling to Union

CLERMONT, Fla, - After a day off the Oswego State softball team resumed its Spring Trip action with a doubleheader, squaring off against Union College in the morning before Wellesley later in the day. Against the Union Statesmen, the Lakers fell 6-1 but were able to gather themselves for the second bout, downing the Blue of Wellesley 9-6. With the day's results, Oswego remains .500 (3-3).

GAME 1:
Oswego found itself down early in the day's first game, allowing four funs through the first two innings. The Lakers attempted to make a comeback in the fourth as Melissa Mulvaney led the inning off with a single up the middle. She then advanced to third on an Erin Sweeney single while a Gabriella Verutccio single plated her two batters later. The comeback fell short though as the Lakers were eventually downed 6-1.

Alexis Nasca got the start in the circle going 1.2 innings before getting relieved by Brittney Sears. The two combined for eight strikeouts on the day.

At the plate six different Lakers contributed a hit.

GAME 2:
It took the Lakers no time at all for the Laker bats to get hot in game two as four runs were scored in the top of the first. Sweeney led off with a single up the middle, getting to second on a wild pitch. Tori Trovato then moved her to third on a single through the left side. Sweeney then crossed home as Gabriella Vertuccio hit a pop up that was mishandled by the second baseman.

With no outs, Nasca continued the hit trend singling and sending home Trovato to second. The Lakers took advantage of another error as Jacquie Porreca got to first and loaded the bases. Ashley Lyman and Sarah McCullough singled in the last two runs of the first, giving the Lakers an early lead.

In the next couple innings the Lakers continued to add to the scoreboard, all the while keeping the Blue off of it. Porreca earned an RBI in the second, ushering in Trovato who was on second. The next inning, Oswego got some help from Wellesley as they walked in a run and then allowed another run to score on an error by the pitcher. Oswego then earned its eighth run of the day as Vertuccio got walked in the second, sending Melanie Kauser home.

Wellesley put up a fight though, scoring six of their own in the bottom of the fourth. Alexandria Connelly then came in to finish out the game not allowing another run.

Nasca would put the final stamp on the game, sending a solo shot over the center field fence, helping to secure the 9-6 win.

Brittney Sears started for Oswego, striking out two and not allowing any earned runs. Connelly recorded her first save of the year, pitching the final 3.1 innings.

At the plate, Trovato went a perfect 3-for-3 with two walks and three runs scored. Nasca also performed well, going 3-for-4 with a homer and three RBI.

Oswego will pick up again at 12 p.m. on Thursday for its final Spring Trip action. The team will square off against the University of Maine-Farmington first before taking on Milikin University directly afterwards.
