Lakers Finish Trip 4-4 With Help from Homers

CLERMONT, Fla, - In the Oswego State softball team's final day of its Spring Trip, the Lakers split once again, finishing the week with a 4-4 record. Oswego downed University of Maine-Farmington 12-2 in five innings in the day's first game, before dropping a close 1-0 contest to Millikin University in the second bout.

GAME 1:

The Lakers began their first game of the day swiftly, scoring two runs in the first two innings. Alexis Nasca reached on a fielder's choice pushing Tori Trovato, who was on third, across the dish. Trovato then got the chance to repay the team by driving in Ashley Lyman with a rip down the left line in the second frame.

Maine-Farmington would score two in the top of the third, but then Oswego's bats really started to come alive. With two outs and two runners on, Lyman rocketed one over the center field fence, giving Oswego the 5-2 lead. The Lakers used that momentum to finish out the inning strong, scoring three more, including an Erin Sweeney RBI double, a Trovato RBI single and a Gabriella Vertuccio RBI single.

In the fourth, Oswego continued to rack up runs beginning with a Katie Heselden sacrifice fly to center that scored Melissa Mulvaney. Then, with runners on first and second, Sweeney mimicked Lyman, sending a bomb over the center field fence to give the Lakers their 12-2 lead.

Alexandria Connelly started in the circle for Oswego, picking up a complete game win with two punch outs and only six hits allowed.

GAME 2:
Oswego's second outing of the day was a defensive battle that was decided by a single run in the bottom of the sixth. The Lakers had a chance in the first inning as Sweeney was waived home from second on a Nasca single into left field, but the freshman was thrown out at home.

Despite the loss, Brittney Sears had a good game on the rubber, allowing only four hits and striking out four through her six innings pitched.

Softball will return to New York for the rest of its 2016 regular season, beginning with a 6 p.m. home doubleheader on Tuesday against SUNY Poly.
